Comedian Red Buttons Dead at 87I remember those Friar's Club roasts; they were uproariously funny. It's when Dean Martin started doing them as a regular series that they lost their gleam, since they had to find people to roast that were not notables.
One of my favorite Buttons' roles was as the newspaperman in
Five Weeks in a Balloon, even if it was rather a cheap
Journey to the Center of the Earth-type knockoff.
He's also one of the parachutists on D-Day in
The Longest Day, as the real-life soldier who became trapped in a church bell tower, tangled on his parachute cords, a target for German snipers, and did very well in the role.
